Trans Nzoia County focuses on promoting SMEs

KAM North Rift Chapter engaged Trans Nzoia County CEC Trade and Industrialization, Mr. Kosgey on promoting the growth of the County’s industries.

Mr. Kosgey noted that Trans Nzoia County is the breadbasket of Kenya from its wealth in maize production, adding that the County is strategically placed with favorable climatic conditions for Agriculture hence the need to focus on Agro-processing.

“It is important to bring on board all stakeholders – private and public sectors – in order to build the capacity of SMEs in the Manufacturing Sector and provide them with financial linkages. Through this, small Manufacturers will be able to produce products that can be acceptable not only in the local market but also the international market,” added Mr Kosgey.

The importance of the industrialization and value addition on produce cannot be over-emphasized. Over the years there has been a demand for value addition to the farm produce in order for the farm produce to attract better prices in the markets. Since the county’s major economic activity is agricultural production, development of agro-based industries that would boost the residents’ income from farming is vital.

The need for value addition is not only confined to the agricultural production but also in other sectors such as tourism whose products would fetch more returns in improved forms.
