KAM hosts 19th Energy Management Awards

Friday 12th May 2023, Nairobi: Isuzu East Africa are the overall winners of this year’s Kenya Association of Manufacturers (KAM) Energy Management Awards (EMA).

The company was crowned during the 19th edition of EMA, themed, Towards a Low Carbon Future: Energy Conservation and Efficiency Conservations where BAT Kenya were the runners up.

Speaking during the awards ceremony, the Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Energy and Petroleum Hon. Davis Chirchir, highlighted the place of energy in the country’s socio-economic prosperity and called for its responsible production and consumption.

“Energy is directly linked to a nation’s economic prosperity as it drives all aspects in our society, from manufacturing, health, education, agriculture, transport and logistics and even at home. Even as we enhance access to energy, it is paramount that we put in place measures to ensure that it is within consumers’ reach. It is our responsibility, as Government to stabilize the cost of power. We have listened to your concerns, as manufacturers, and are working to resolve this challenge. Our collaboration goes a long way back, and through it, we hope to reach more industries, public institutions, and commercial buildings in advancing the energy efficiency agenda.”

KAM Chairman, Rajan Shah celebrated local manufacturers for embracing sustainable production.

“The total electrical energy savings realized by participants of the 19th Energy Management Awards was 92,453 GJ (25,681,389 kWh) for the projects implemented. This is able to power 71,337 DC lifeline households per annum and is also equivalent to a 4 MW plant. This demonstrates the manufacturing sector’s unwavering commitment to supporting the realization of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).”

He observed that whereas local industry has made great strides, the sector still needs to be supported, saying, “We urge Government to formulate and implement policies that promote green export market, enhance partnership with the business community; provide technical assistance and support towards adoption of climate friendly solutions in the country and enhance access to finance, especially for pilot projects to inspire companies to act.”
