On 5 April 2017, Kiambu County Water and Environmental technical committee handed over the first Kiambu County Water and Sanitation Services sector policy to Deputy Governor, HE. Gerald Githinji.
The development of the policy was a collaborative effort by the Department of Water, Environment and Natural with financial support from GIZ. KAM was among the organizations that provided additional technical support in the development of the policy.
While speaking at the handing over ceremony, the Deputy Governor said that the policy seeks to fill the critical gaps that have overtime reduced the benefits of better water service provision. “The policy will set out guidelines for provision of safe water and sanitation service for both domestic and industrial uses,” he added.
Other critical areas addressed are sewerage, onsite sanitation services, storm water and solid waste management.
Kiambu County has seen tremendous industrial and real estate development, especially in towns along Thika super highway; Ruiru, Juja and Thika. This development has not been matched by adequate support infrastructure and amenities. Hence development of this policy is expected to address these gaps.
