Salt Sub-Sector engages Mining PS
The KAM Salt Sub Sector engaged the Principal Secretary, State Department for Mining, Mr John Omenge on 21st November 2018 to address the challenges facing the Sub-Sector.
The Salt Sub-Sector was placed under the Ministry of Mining and Petroleum following the enactment of the Mining Act 2016. The Sub-Sector, however, feels that they were unfairly placed since they harvest salt.
Mr Omenge noted that the law requires companies to register and acquire a mining license for the Ministry to protect them from other regulators and ministries. However, the need to create an annex that highlights the uniqueness of the salt process and gives special consideration within the Act was noted.
The meeting also recommended the need for a task force that will provide clear guidelines as to why salt should be given special consideration. The Taskforce will have representatives draw from the salt sub-sector representatives, KAM, Mining, Water Resources Management Authority, Kenya Forest Services, Ministry of Lands, and County government, among others.
Additionally, it was agreed that comprehensive training and awareness creation on the Mining Act, 2016 is needed.
