What we need to do to ensure stability post-COVID 19
Where will we be in the next six months? One year? What will we be doing differently post-COVID 19 and how do we thrive? The COVID-19 pandemic has forcefully disrupted our normal way of life. These changes will stay with us for a long time to come and we must adapt swiftly.

Home-grown solutions are key for sustainable development
Necessity is the mother of all inventions. We are witnessing an increase in innovations as the world races to  develop a vaccine to treat COVID-19. Many law enforcement agencies across the globe, for instance, are turning to Artificial Intelligence and related technologies for support in unique and innovative ways including surveillance and detection capabilities. Spain started using drones to patrol and enforce quarantine and to broadcast audio messages to the public, encouraging them to stay at home.

Proposed Tax Amendments will aggravate COVID-19’s impact on the economy
On 25th March President Uhuru Kenyatta announced a raft of measures in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and directed the National Treasury to take steps to implement them as a matter of urgency. The measures themselves as announced by the President were well received in all quarters, with the only question being the extent to which they would mitigate the economic pain that is sure to come. But the message was clear – steps need to be taken to cushion the private sector in the wake of what is now clearly going to be the largest economic shock of the last 100 years.

COVID – 19: Let’s take action now to flatten the curve
The number of confirmed cases of coronavirus in Kenya has jumped to 50, as of 30th March 2020. Whilst announcing the above, the Cabinet Secretary for Health, Mutahi Kagwe noted that the virus is no longer being imported, rather, it is being passed on among ourselves. If there was ever a time for all of us to roll up our sleeves and face this pandemic, it is now. We need to move fast to flatten the curve. This is down to individual responsiveness and responsibility.

Coronavirus is our wake-up call. No one could have predicted its disastrous impact. But that is the nature of disasters; most are sudden, unpredictable and leave in their wake unimaginable misery and loss. We have been quite rudely awakened to the essentiality of disaster resilience.

In less than two months the country’s annual budget will be read outlining the priority areas for the next year. Already, the Parliamentary Budget Office has given its analysis of the budget policy statement, sounding a red alert on diminishing funds for national development.

What we need to spur economic growth
I was recently in a networking forum where a participant asked how we can fix our economy. The question is dominant on the minds of many running businesses in this country. Revitalizing our economy need not be a long and complicated task, it is quite easily achievable if we prioritize lowering the cost of doing business and driving competitiveness of local industries.

The cost of doing business is becoming unbearable
We are living in tough economic times. Businesses are struggling to stay afloat and the job market shrinks every day. Entrepreneurship and starting up businesses, in this difficult environment, is becoming a pipe dream for a lot of young people. The Government needs to wake up to these realities and start implementing urgent measures to salvage the situation.
